Summer Camp Simple Cipher

My big gal is entering her second week of Summer Camp which means I’m already missing her. At the last camp we made hand signals so she could relay messages to us via the camp photographer. It worked magically. But this camp we wanted to have a little more fun.

We do have a chance to send our camper a email message each night and they read it the next day. On the way to camp we made a last minute decision to communicate via a simple cipher so no one would know what I am saying to her.

Is this silly, yes. But also fun which is critical when raising sovereigns.

The Cipher

  • j = 1
  • k = 2
  • l = 3
  • m = 4
  • n = 5
  • o = 6
  • p = 7
  • q = 8
  • r = 9
  • s = 10
  • t = 11
  • u = 12
  • v = 13
  • w = 14
  • x = 15
  • y = 16
  • z = 17
  • a = 18
  • b = 19
  • c = 20
  • d = 21
  • e = 22
  • f = 23
  • g = 24
  • h = 25
  • i = 26

We started the cipher on J because it’s easy to remember (my name).

Encoding the message

Next I decided to research some information about Wings of Fire children’s fantasy series about dragons. I wanted to send her a message about something she would understand.

Original Message

“The Dragonets of Destiny founded Jade Mountain Academy despite skepticism and internal clashes. Older dragons doubted the mixed tribes, while Tsunami’s strictness and Sunny’s leniency caused friction. Yet, they aimed for peace among dragons.”

I decided to NOT include punctuation marks or spaces between words. Sure that would make it easier but no, not today.

Encoded Message

I bet this took a very long time to decode. Not sure if she wrote down on paper separately or if she had paper from the email we wrote her. So I am really curious to get feedback from her. I hope she enjoyed this and if so we will definitely make the cipher more difficult next year.

UPDATE 4 days into camp

My daughter sent us a note from summer camp and it is heart warming to say the least. At the very end it includes an encoded cipher… I’m not crying, you’re crying!

Encoded Message

17 6 6 3 22 16 12 4 16 12 4

This encoded message decodes to “zoolayumyum” which according to the machines “is a magical fruit in the “Wings of Fire” series, known for its delicious taste and unique properties. It’s mentioned in the context of RainWing diets, as they consume various fruits found in the rainforest, with ZooLayumYum being a particularly favored treat.” I cried when I got this message.

We are definitely going to increase the difficulty on the cipher next year. This is too fun.
