Brainstorming Zines

Since leaving Bitcoin Magazine this summer/fall, I’ve had time to reflect and, more importantly, reboot. By the time I left for a new career in oil and gas, I found myself pretty black-pilled. To be clear, Bitcoin Magazine wasn’t the black-pill—no, that was actually quite fun—but part of the job was being chronically online and creating a magazine that was meant to be based and a big “f*** you” to the state (though, whether we accomplished that is debatable; the magazine team and leadership were aligned, and we did the best we could). Fast forward two months into the new career, and now I’m in a fantasy football league, surrounded by “Grill Americans” (not complaining, just saying), and I’m feeling that urge to create again.

When I left Bitcoin Magazine for this job, I unsubscribed from nearly every dissident newsletter and seriously cleaned up my Twitter feed. I couldn’t escape the doom. Now, a couple of months removed, I miss it. I want to make something. I want to create a magazine—but not just another Bitcoin magazine, not another Citadel21, and definitely not a bad rip-off of Bitcoin Magazine. I want something different.

1I want to make a magazine that I’d actually want to read, and for now, that’s this: Freedom Technology (Bitcoin, Open Source Defense, and Dissident Right). These are the circles in my Venn diagram and the backbone of Beefcoin. I have a good pulse on all three of these communities, and I know I could pull in some content from these folks. I know how to print and ship; I just need to define the scope. What is this thing going to be? Who is it for? What will it cost? How frequently will it ship? Who will it piss off? Who is the competition? Is there even a market demand for something like this? There are so many questions.

One important thing I learned from focusing on Bitcoin is that Bitcoiners don’t like to spend money, so focusing only on Bitcoin for a project like this isn’t a sustainable way to generate enough cash flow to keep it alive. Considering the other interest groups, I have to believe there’s a similar demand group. I don’t think the 3D gun guys are a huge demographic, but they don’t have many magazine options today, so it feels like they’d naturally want to support or grab a copy of this, even if only a third of the content was about 3D guns. The same mindset goes for the Dissident Right; however, this group is by far the largest and most inclined to spend money on a niche magazine like this.

Zines are meant to be low-budget, but people still want high quality. So, can you achieve high quality with a low-budget aesthetic? I think it’s possible. Look to the archives for inspiration…

    • Waco

I want really nice photos of 3d printed guns, but need some models and not sure how to source that, also will need budget to build guns, need a real one in ATX to help with this, I know he’s out there. If the magazine dimension is large enough, the photo spreads of the guns could be to scale which would be sick, or if it is too small, maybe include a fold out poster which would be epic too.

Done for now, felt good to dump here. Will update soon®.
